Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the Southwest Shore of Kuaui, HI.

Time

It was sunset on a late summer evening.

Lighting

In this case, it was pretty straight forward. No additional light beyond that from the sunset.

Equipment

This was actually taken by an old Canon EOS Rebel film camera about 15 years ago. I have since scanned and edited in Photoshop CC.

Inspiration

Kuaui is stunningly beautiful. The photo opportunities along the wide, unoccupied beaches are endless. In this case, I happened to see the sole man meditating on the beach and thought it would make an especially interesting photo.

Editing

Since I had to scan this from a 15 year old print, I did take the opportunity to make it a bit more dramatic. I increased the saturation of the sky and applied motion blur to the water. I also enhanced the highlights on the breaking wave to draw more attention to it.

In my camera bag

The old film camera is long gone. Now I use a Canon 6D with a variety of lenses: Canon 24-104, Canon 70-200, Canon 100mm Macro, Tamron 150-600, and a Rokinon 14mm. Canon 600ex Flash, and a variety of CP and ND filters.

Feedback

Go to Hawaii! It's virtually impossible to get a bad sunset photo! If I had the opportunity to take this shot again knowing now what I didn't know then, I would definitely use a tripod with a longer exposure (and thus an ND filter).
