:) Thanks! Even if it's a well choreographed set of maneuvers, I'm always amazed at what the pilots can do.

I saw all the other comments and so almost did not add another - then I thought no - this is one of those images that enough cannot be said about. This is the best airplane shot I have seen in a very long time!

Location
This photo was taken during the Naval Air Station Oceana Airshow in Virginia Beach, VA.Time
Approximately 1pm.Lighting
The lighting that day was awful. It was a very grey and overcast day, making it a challenge to get interesting/unique shots of the planes. Thankfully, this particular photo benefited from the interesting smoke trails.Equipment
This photo was taken handheld with a Canon 6D and Tamron 150-600mm. 1/640 sec at f/6.3, ISO 100.Inspiration
I've always been interested in aviation. An airshow, especially one as impressive as NAS Oceana's, is a great way to blend my love of planes and photography.Editing
In Lightroom, I first cropped very slightly to frame the image the way I wanted. I then adjusted the clarity and vibrance. It still wasn't as dramatic as I wanted, so I used Topaz ReStyle to apply the much darker brownish tint and more pronounced contrast. This added some depth to the image and gave it an almost surreal feel.In my camera bag
Canon 6D with a variety of lenses: Canon 24-104, Canon 70-200, Canon 100 macro, Rokinon 14, and Tamron 150-600. Canon 600ex flash. Several filters, including CPs and NDs, and lots of cleaning supplies, extra memory/batteries.Feedback
In the case of airshows or capturing flight in general, the extra reach and flexibility provided by a supertelephoto zoom is very helpful. While most of my shots that day were at 600mm, this particular one was at 300mm so that I could frame the image with the interesting trails of smoke. I also recommend using AI Servo focusing mode with all focus points enabled. The planes are obviously moving very fast and over a wide area and at all angles, so I personally prefer shooting handheld. With a heavy lens, your arms will get tired, but it's worth it!
