Location
This photo was taken in my back yard. My son found a turtle and wanted me to take some photos before we released it.Time
The photo was taken late afternoon on a somewhat overcast day.Lighting
Lighting was easy - the overcast day (nature's whitebox) provided very even lighting with no harsh spots. For most macro shots, I'll use a ring light, but for this one I didn't even need that.Equipment
Canon 6D with Canon 100M L Macro. Handheld, no flash.Inspiration
I knew that this turtle, found and affectionately named Rafael by my then 3 year old son, was NOT going to be a permanent part of our happy little family. Turtles have a surprisingly pungent odor! So before we released him to find *his* family, I agreed to take photos of Rafael for my son.Editing
In Lightroom, I did very little post-processing: minimal exposure/contrast adjustment and minor tonal adjustment to saturate the green color a bit.In my camera bag
Canon 6D with a variety of lenses: Canon 24-104, Canon 70-200, Canon 100 macro, Rokinon 14, and Tamron 150-600. Canon 600ex flash. Ring light. Several filters, including CPs and NDs, and lots of cleaning supplies, extra memory/batteries.Feedback
When it comes to capturing an interesting shot of any living creature: be patient, but ready. At the time I took this photo, he wasn't just sitting there eating grass. Moments before the shot, he was sitting on a small log and decided to crawl off. He slipped and did a face-plant in the grass below him and came up with the grass in his mouth and that's when I snapped the photo.
