Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Guajira Peninsula, in the border between Venezuela and Colombia. The northern-most tip of South America, La Guajira is mystical place for its native inhabitants the Wayuu people, who still live there. This road leads to a sacred beach, and the people in "the distance" are making their way there. Arid and troublesome, La Guajira is an inhospitable environment covered in salt, where the Wayuu people find refuge and space to live by their own rules and culture.

Time

Usually one would think of the Caribbean as continuously sunny, however the day I took this photo taken, in mid-summer, the skies were completely overcast. This was around 10am, but it hardly shows it. We stopped for a moment to check the wheels in our 4x4, and that's when I spotted these people making a pilgrimage.

Lighting

This shot was mostly accidental. I had a completely different thing in mind, yet the natural light had other thoughts. It was inexplicably dark and uncommonly overcast. At the time the biggest struggle was focus, which is why there's that "mirage" quality to it. I set up as quickly as possible, knowing I had maybe 2-3 min before the people in the distance disappeared and before our driver would push us to start back again before we got trapped in the dunes.

Equipment

I took this photo with Nikon D300, with a 35-200 lens (but I can't remember what I was using exactly - everything happened really fast).

Inspiration

For hours we saw nothing and then at one point we saw birds. These were the first people we had seen that weren't in our group in at least 6 hours. I felt a need to photograph something, and watching them in the distance gave me the feeling of not being "alone".

Editing

Usually I would do some processing and light correcting, but I can say that this is the one time I can safely use the #NoFilter tag

In my camera bag

Usually I have my Nikon d300 when I visit a place that has convenient access routes. Lately, my trips involve remote locations with inclement weather for electronic equipment, so I've switched to iPhone photography for practicality (I know it's blasphemy to some).

Feedback

La Guajira is a striking part of the world with marked colour contrast. My suggestion would be to focus on bringing out the colours through working the lines that fit what you are trying to say.
