Behind The Lens

Location

Kallang Basin, Singapore

Time

Evening time/blue hour.

Lighting

I wanted to show the fireworks in the blue hour rather than when it gets too dark when the fireworks appeared which is usually the case. I feel the blue hour makes better photo bringing out the sky and surrounding buildings & lights better.

Equipment

I shot with Canon 6D, wide-angle 16-35mm f2.8 L lens, Manfotto tripod

Inspiration

I'm intrigued by fireworks & how to capture them on photo. It was a challenge to capture the fireworks as it was my 1st time shooting fireworks with my DSLR.

Editing

I took 3 different exposures during the blue hour, shooting in raw. Then do a HDR merge with the 3 shots in Photoshop. Then from many shots of the fireworks I chose the best one and blend it in Photoshop. The fireworks shot I chosen has the best reflection as well.

In my camera bag

Besides my Canon 6D, I have my wide angle (16-35mm) lens, 70-200mm f2.8 L lens, a range of filters including Lee filters/holder system & big stopper, a polarizer, remote trigger, extra batteries

Feedback

Look for bodies of water to capture the reflections of the fireworks. Give allowance for the height of the fireworks & the reflection also. A wide angle lens would be suitable. Choose a firm ground for your tripod where passerby don't cause any vibrations to the tripod as usually there will be a large crowd gathered for fireworks. Have fun!
