Location
I took this photo in India, at the side of the road between Pune and MumbaiTime
This shot was taken in the late afternoon. We had set off to drive from Pune to Mumbai, which is a 4, 5, 6, or 7+ hour drive depending on the traffic!! We had been driving for a couple of hours and we were in a sort of mountain pass when we spotted some monkeys at the side of the road. We took this as an excuse to stop for a rest - and a great excuse to take some more pictures.Lighting
The lighting in the shot is all natural. It was late afternoon and the sun was low in the sky and was creating a warm glow.Equipment
The shot was hand held using a Canon 5D Mark III The Lens was a Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM and was taken at 1/500 sec at f/2.8 and 100 ISOInspiration
The inspiration for taking this shot came from opportunity! This was the first time that I had seen monkeys in the wild, so there was no chance that I was going to just look at them without seizing the opportunity to grab my camera and record the moment for years to come :-)Editing
Very little post processing for this shot as the Canon 5D Mark II is a great camera! The shot was taken in full manual mode and in Raw format. I imported the photo into Lightroom, made a few basic modifications and cropped the image. In my camera bag
My camera bag is always very heavy - quite often heavier than my suitcase!! It is a good workout and is a result of the fact that I always like to have options. I have now moved to a Canon 5D SR camera, and have a variety of lenses. My favourites are my 16-35mm f/2.8, my fisheye 8-15mm f/1.4, my 100-400mm, and my 180mm f/3.5 Macro. All of the lenses are Canon L series lenses as I love the quality and feel of them. I also have a few extras that come along. Remote control and Remote release (particularly useful for Macro to eliminate shake), A set of LEE Filters and Polariser for Landscapes, a Macro flash with spare batteries, a 1.4x Canon Extender to add to some of the lenses, a set of Kenko Extension Tubes (again for the Macro photography), Spare memory cards, batteries, a powerful and adjustable torch, cleaning equipment and finally a Tripod. As I say, when you add all that up, the bag is pretty heavy :-)Feedback
My advice for anyone wanting to capture similar types of images is always to look for different angles and look away from the obvious. In this case, there were quite a few other monkeys out in the open a hundred feet or so away. I was looking around for something other than a straight on shot, and I spotted this monkey behind a rock (at the time all I spotted was his hands!). I positioned myself low on the ground as I wanted the rock to be positioned at his eye height and then I waited for him to pop his head up to look around. So I guess my advice is to always look around, and also to have some patience to wait for the shot to come to you.....
