Location
I took this photo at a small lake a few miles from my home, I took my camera with me in case the fishing was slow going or to take a photo of a monster catch!Time
It must have been about midday, it was really hot. this dragonfly kept landing about five or six feet away from me after patrolling the lake.Lighting
I did use the cameras on board flash but that was it though, it was very bright so I used the flash to fill in shadows a bit.Equipment
The camera I used was a Nikon D5300, lens was my trusty 105mm macro with a x2 teleconverter, giving a focal length of 210mm so you can be much further away from your bugs and less chance of spooking them :).Inspiration
My inspiration was that I have never at that time been that close to a dragon with my camera! I have been more lucky since then though.Editing
As with many of my photos I did no edit on this at all, off camera and onto viewbug. if I do edit its only contrast or exposure, I use the standard Nikon view software. In my camera bag
I always have my bag with me just in case, its got my Nikon D5300, 105mm macro, 50mm prime, 18-55mm, 55-300mm and 150-500mm lenses. also I always carry a x2 lens and a x1.4 lens. And all the random other bits like lens cleaning stuff.Feedback
I really think a x2 lens on a long macro lens is really worth the money, I can take a 1-1 macro shot from nearly 4 feet away. with the x2 converter it works out nearly 5-1 enlargement if you can get that close that is! converters give you false f numbers, I use f29 to f45 mostly, iso 500, 3/4 manual on camera flash and exposure 200th for most close up bugs. if its a dull day iso has to go up to 1250 sometimes though.
