Tradition began in this tiny farming community years ago and we were invited to participate in the week long celebration of 4th of July week or Independence week 5 years ago. My POPS lost his battle with the "death sentence" disease of ALS (LOU GEHRIGS DISEASE) and interestingly enough...there is a strong occurence of this disease here where we now live. The Knights of Columbus volunteer to hand out water to runners that have joined the forces of one local family as they raise money each year to bring awareness and relief to families dealing with ALS. The Race-Walk has grown exponentially just in the few years Dave has joined this fun loving, community minded, loving group of local men to help with this 1 event. This year the race hosted nearly 350 runners-walkers from all over. One man...DOC. ....has been a driving force in his church and community forever...it's his profile I captured as runners had turned and were making their way back to the park. The race is held every July 3rd in Walnut,Il in honor of The Payne family who has and continues to lose generations of members of their family to this incurable disease. It's heartbreaking and inspirational all at once.
