Modern day Mysore city was erstwhile Kingdom of Mysore which was founded in 1399. It was brought under the Dominion of India after Indian Independence in 1947 after princely states were abolished and the rulers lost their ruling rights, The Privy Purse was started to all former kingdoms as an agreement to first integrate and later merge with Independent India.

The palace is now home to Titular Crown Prince Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar of the Wodeyar dynasty. This dynasty is the only royal family in Indian history to have ruled for 650 years without ever having to relinquish its kingdom.
