Behind The Lens

Location

I clicked this photo in city Zoo (Nehru Zoological Park) of hyderabad, India. That day was my first attempt to Wildlife photography and it was a great learning lesson in terms of Photography as well as Wildlife.

Time

That day is still stored in my memory and still unforgettable. I woke up early and called my friend that we are going to Visit the City Zoo today, started early from home and we took a long road drive to Zoo. With full excitement we entered the Zoo and to my surprise Zoo was spread in a very large area. Walking down from one area to another, I hear roar of tiger so we started walking in that direction. On our way chasing the tiger roar we saw this beautiful white peacock dancing. I instantly jumped near to the peacock area and started moving left-right to get the correct angle. I was absolutely amazing to witness this beautiful moment. This shot was clicked on 15th June 2014 at 10:06:39 AM.

Lighting

I remember the day was sunny and sky was clear. There was ample amount of natural light but Zoo authorities did some setup in such a way that It was appearing as a dark background. All the light that was falling on this beautiful peacock was from front and a little bit of light from top, left and right side. In the front light and dark background the feather of peacock was shining beautifully and every single thread of feather was clearly visible.

Equipment

This shot was clicked with Canon 600D(Rebel T3i) using Canon 55-250mm zoom lens. Focal length - 55mm Aperture - f/4.0 ISO - 400 No other equipment were used for this shot.

Inspiration

I didn't plan for this photo previously and didn't even have the idea that the Zoo I am visiting will be having this beautiful bird. I was chasing a tiger roar because I am very fascinating about the entire cat family. on my chase I saw this white peacock surrounded by other peacocks. The sight was so beautiful that I couldn't move further and jumped near this area. waited for almost 30 minutes to get this white bird alone and wings spread. I spent another 30 minutes to click this white peacock.

Editing

Yes, I have done post-processing for this shot. Firstly the background of this image was very dark with greenish tough but I wanted it to be absolute black so I converted the image to black and white, this way I got my desired background. Since it was a white colored peacock so I didn't effect the white peacock and the white color of feather came out brighter against black background. Apart from this I did White-Balance and contrast correction.

In my camera bag

The very first lens I put in my bag is 50mm f/1.8 prime lens from Canon. I keep my Canon 600D (Rebel T3i) body with 18-55mm Kit Lens and 55-250mm Zoom lens. A extra pack of battery is essential along with Polarization filter.

Feedback

Wildlife photography needs patience. You need be very steady to hold the camera otherwise use a tripod. Click multiple shots as there is continuous movement with animals, you can also try your shutter in burst mode if you face difficulty with timing your shots.
