I got up early on New Year's Day to enjoy the quiet of the early morning. I looked out the window and through the heavy snow I saw these sundogs. I ran out on the deck in my bare feet to get the picture. We get sundogs often in winter but with the heavy snow falling they looked entirely different.Time
I have always loved to get up with the sun to enjoy the quiet of the day before the rest of the family comes to life. In January morning comes to our house around 8am. Sundogs only occur with the right temps and moisture and at 45 degrees above the horizon. In a few minutes they are gone again.Lighting
The only lighting was the rising sun and the reflection from the snow, both on the ground and in the air.Equipment
This was shot on my Sony DSC-T300, handheld, without any flash.Inspiration
When I saw the sundogs through the window I ran out on the deck, in the snow, in my bare feet to get a shot of them. I took several and when my feet got too cold I had to go back in. As sundogs are rare and fleeting I didn't take time to get dressed before I went after the shot.Editing
I did a small amount of levels adjusting and brightening in Sony Play Memories. As the camera is a point and shoot, it only shoots in JPEG, there were few edits to be made.In my camera bag
I carry my Sony P&S, this one is the DSC-T300, and my mirrorless Sony a6000 most of the time. I also have the Sony a57 in my bag. I carry several lenses, midrange, wide angle, and telephoto. I keep my tripod strapped to the side of my backpack too. Always have an extra battery and lens cleaning supplies in there as well. Be prepared isn't just for boy scouts.Feedback
In this case it was just timing and luck that I was up and looked out the window at the right time. All I can say is always have a charged up battery and a camera handy, shoot whatever you see that interests you. I shoot a lot more images than will ever see the light of day, you can always cull but you can never get the shot you missed back again. Always be looking and paying attention to what is around you, there is more every day than most people think, we just have to see it to capture it.
