Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken in a local studio in Nottingham. The downstairs is a beautiful gothic style bar with this wonderful derelict looking upstairs. Nottingham is full of buildings like this and was lucky to be able to shoot there.Time
The shoot was planned so that we could get some promotional shots for the band and started around 10am. This was one of the first shots that was taken after giving the band a tour around all the different areas so was taken around 11am.Lighting
The upstairs of the studio have these amazing windows. They are at least 10 foot high by 3 or 4 foot wide. In this particular room there were three of them and let in so much wonderful light. Just to help the lighting I just used a simple speed light and shooting through a white umbrella.Equipment
Canon 5d Mark 2, Sigma 24-70 HSM lens, Speedlight, White Umbrella.Inspiration
It was all about the red chair. The red chair is a fantastic focus point and meant I could craft the group shot we needed. Starting with the lead vocalist at the front and then spreading the guys around the chair. After taking a couple of shots it was just fantastic and set the tone for the rest of the shoot.Editing
The post processing for this was very simple. A little colour correction and very slight processing on the band members face.In my camera bag
When shooting on location my camera bag is very simple. I have the Canon 5d Mark 2, the sigma 24-70 Lens, a 70-200 Lens and a bunch of gels and velcro dots. I then have an equipment bag that usually has three light stands, 3 speed lights, 2 White umbrellas, 1 silver umbrella, 5 in 1 reflector, tape, clamps and random swatches of cloth. Means I am usually prepared for most eventualities and can just focus on getting the images and not worrying that I have forgotten something I may need.Feedback
The setup was really simple. A Speed light setup to the cameras left pointing at the band and the huge windows to the left. The most important aspect though was communication and getting to know the band. After a couple of meetings ( and drinks beforehand ) with the band, the day of the shoot felt so comfortable. With everyone on the same page the shoot just went smoothly and made creating the images stress free.
