Lonely shot - feeling from this..
See all

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken outside my old apartment in Nottingham. The building used to be an old factory so had all these varying and beautiful elements to it.

Time

The image was taken early afternoon one weekend. We were running through some modelling headshots - once we had captured those we just decided to explore around the building to see what else we could create.

Lighting

I wanted the lighting to be simple and just show off Robert. A speedlight to his right and a reflector being held to the left was all that was used. The day was beautifully overcast but bright so made shooting a breeze.

Equipment

Canon 5d Mk2 with a Sigma 24-70 Lens. Speedlight Reflector

Inspiration

This whole section of the shoot was spur of the moment, just to see what we could create. Its sister image was standing in the middle of the deserted road behind the building. But then we saw the panel area and it just went from there. It was all very instinctual.

Editing

Only very slight skin retouching and then conversion into black and white. It just suited the mood and image in the end.

In my camera bag

My bag is like the Tardis. I have the 5d Mark 2. Never lets me down. I have the Sigma 24-70 lens nearly always attached. I love that lens and what I can do with it. I have a 74-200 lens just in case. As well as all that, I have the usual collection of things I can use to McGuyver things when needed: Cable ties, duct tape, rope, cinefoil, scissors, pins and electrical tape. Usually ready for any off the cuff ideas and 'Do you know what would be fun? Let just do....' moments.

Feedback

For me. Take your brain out of the equation. See whats working with the model and go with it. You may have 10 ideas where 90% of them don't work, but then that last one just blows you away.
