Behind The Lens

Location

Tri-Rock Triathlon In Austin Tx.

Time

Midday.

Lighting

It was bright out and I needed a slow shutter, so I positioned myself where I could get out of the direct sunlight in the buildings. I also looked carefully at the background as I wanted something that wasn't too distracting, but set the urban scene.

Equipment

Sigma 70-200 2.8 lens, Canon 5d MkII camera.

Inspiration

I was wanting to test my lens and this event was happening. I thought it would be a good time to do some panning and check the lens performance at the same time.

Editing

Just color correction and contrast.

In my camera bag

Canon dslr lineup, 70-200 2.8 lens with I.S. 24-70 2.8 lens with IS, tripods and monopods, flash and small video lights. Various filters and gizmos.

Feedback

Look for events to go capture like this. Community events like concerts and sporting events often provide an opportunity for dramatic shots. If you don't know how to pan a photo (how I kept the rider in focus while blurring the background to show the motion) check out Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson for a great explanation.
