Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Bigfork, MT. The model looks comfortable, but it was about 20 degrees and we had to bundle her in fur between shots. :)

Time

Around 11 AM.

Lighting

I had an off camera flash in a softbox held by an assistant.

Equipment

5dMkII, Sigma 70-200 2.8 with image stabilization, Canon 580 Flash in an umbrella softbox held by an assistant.

Inspiration

This was a cover shoot for 406 Celebrations Magazine. They chose one of the other shots for the cover, but I was happy with several shots and this is one.

Editing

I used Lightroom and did color correction and minor skin touch ups. The light was very good so not much needed doing.

In my camera bag

Depends on what I'm shooting. I shoot both Canon and Sony professional cameras, I have lenses from Canon, Sigma, and Tamron, but all from their professional lineups. I use a nice little Monfrotto tripod (I hike a lot). I have various lights (flash and strobe), flashes, stands, umbrellas, softboxes, and other light modifiers.

Feedback

Since this model was backlit and I wanted to keep the color in the background, an off camera flash was essential to getting this shot. I could have gotten a nice shot of the model in natural light, but the background would have blown without the touch of flash. In addition the neutral flash color helps to keep any color casts in check, and this was important since the model was on a lawn of green grass.
