Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken as the sun sets over Southampton at the start of a cruise holiday. The way nature shows its form with the clouds and the passing birds was a wonder to see. My interest in photography goes back to my school days where we were often sent out to take pictures and then develop them ourselves in the school darkroom.

Time

This was taken mid March in the early evening as we were setting sail. Just to look around from the top deck of the ship and see a different perspective of the surroundings with the city on one side and this view on the other made it awe inspiring.

Lighting

I wanted to try and capture the image I was seeing as well as the image I had in my head of what I wanted others to see. I tried to keep it simple with the natural lighting but also tried to capture a sillouette of some sort with the hills and trees.

Equipment

I had the opportunity to capture this using three methods, I had my Nikon D3200, Samsung NV100HD and iPhone 5 so I was actually spoilt for choice. I carry all three purely to grasp what each lens as such sees.

Inspiration

The inspiration behind this was just the natural beauty of the sunset, the light through the clouds, the background and the passing birds.

Editing

I just left this as it was, I tend to leave things as 'raw' as possible and didn't do any 'tweaking' with this shot.

In my camera bag

I generally carry with me a Nikon D3200, DX AF-S 18-55mm lens, Tamron AF 70-300mm lens, spare battery and charger (amazing where you can find to charge your battery), couple of 64gb SDXC Patriot & Sandisk Ultra SD Cards, Wireless Remote, couple of filters, lens caps and a lens cloth. Along with a tripod, Samsung NV100HD (my point and shoot spare) and iPhone 5

Feedback

My advice would be to have the image in your head and try and capture what you see and take many shots. If you're hoping for a great sunset shot be prepared to spend a while capturing images and waiting until you are happy with the height of the sun, the surrounding clouds, any passing wildlife etc. Many a time I've gone through images where I'm self critical and keep just a couple from a roll of 25-40 shots.
