Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken whilst I was on holiday at Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia, Canada. I had been driving the Cabot Trail and arrived at Peggy's Cove just as the mist and fog was coming in. I am a self-taught photographer and enjoy taking images of landscapes and nature with varying degrees of success.

Time

It was late afternoon and I really wanted to see the lighthouse and the waves crashing against it. However, as the mist and fog rolled in, it became quite dangerous on the wet rocks, so we headed down the bay and saw this lone boat with the fog behind it.

Lighting

From the bouys in the foreground to the boat in the lake, there was no artificial light, but that was ideal for me; as I wanted to take a dramatic photo of the weather creeping up in the bay.

Equipment

This photo was taken with my Pentax Optio Z10 - a point shoot camera. At the time I could not afford a digital SLR, and this was a very good camera to get into digital.

Inspiration

I enjoy taking photos of landscapes and nature and try to use the natural light to capture the moment of the photo. I took many photos that day of different images. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Editing

The only post processing I did was too intensify the colours of the bouys and the boat to make them stand out.

In my camera bag

I now own a Canon EOS 550D with an EFS 18-55mm lens coupled with an 81A filter. I also have a Canon EFS 55-250mm lens; a Tamron 90mm F/2.8 Macro lens and a C-P.L filter; and a Joby Gorila Tripod.

Feedback

As the weather can change very quickly, it makes for very interesting and diverse photos. Therefore, taking photos on days when whether is less than perfect (not juts clear blue sunny skies) can make for some fantastic photography. I had never been to Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia before so was not able to take time to assess various photo angles, but doing some home/ prep work on the landscape area you wish to photograph is always advantageous. I had seen photos of the lighthouse before hand and knew I wanted to visit the Cove and take lots of photos.
