Thank you. Mother Nature was kind enough to provide the elements I needed to capture this. I was with a photographer friend that evening and our intent was to try and capture some descent sunsets. In the end, I felt this one worked.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in 2012 while on an August photo shoot at Elk Island National Park situated West of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The park is a combination Provincial Park and nature reserve where Buffalo are raised and allowed to roam in a natural environment.

Time

In Alberta, August can provide us with daylight hours averaging up to 14hrs. In this photograph the Sun and settled just below the horizon affording me some beautiful under color on the clouds and nice slice of additional color on the horizon.

Lighting

When you go out and decide to shoot sunsets (or sunrises) you most likely have an idea of the potential color and lighting that you will be dealing with. However, how much of those aspects will be determined by the cloud cover. Get just the right amount and Mother Nature can put on a great show by producing some beautiful and colorful displays. In this case, I lucked out by having a strong cloud presence with just enough 'holes' to create a strong contrast in lighting. You can't plan for this and when it appears you have to act quickly or you may loose the magic moment. Timing therefore, can be everything!

Equipment

Currently, my equipment consists of a Sony DSLR A77V (cropped sensor) with an 18-70mm lens. When I shoot landscapes I always use a tripod with a remote release to avoid introducing any sort of movement. My preferred shooting mode is Aperature Priority, manual focus, ISO and WB.

Inspiration

Timing! I was there to shoot a Sunset and had already taken a few photographs but when I saw this display being presented, I quickly decided to find a spot and start shooting. I wanted to try and capture most of the sky because to me, that is where the drama was playing out.

Editing

Since I shoot most of images in RAW format, post-processing is done with the intent of producing an image that pleases me. Since we all have our personal preferences for things like color, I believe it is best to satisfy first and foremost the photographer in me and not try to produce a finished product trying to satisfy the masses. This results in my finished images (in most cases) having a higher degree of vibrance in the colours.

In my camera bag

Very little equipment. A cleaner for my lenses, polarizing filter and two other lenses - 75-300 lens along with an 8mm Fisheye lens. That is pretty much it.

Feedback

As with any endeavor, in order to get better at is, you much practice. With photography, the more images you take, the more you begin to pre-visualize them whether you have your camera with you or not. Doing so, helps prepare you for those special moments when events or Mother Nature bump into you. Certainly it is always nice when you feel you have captured something that you think is special but when others agree, that is the 'icing on the cake' and honestly, it makes you feel good. Simply put, explore your backyard, whether it is morning, noon or night and you will be surprise what you can capture.
