Behind The Lens

Location

Lake Temagami in Northern Ontario, Canada.

Time

2:21 p.m. September 10, 2013

Lighting

An afternoon fog bank rolled in and created an almost surreal atmosphere. This island was the nearest - short of the one we were moored at - with the shoreline and other islands all but hidden in the fog. Loved it, no wind and almost a dead calm surface.

Equipment

Sony A-77V DSLR, tripod, remote shutter release, Sony 75-300 zoom lens.

Inspiration

It was the atmosphere created by the fog - it was haunting, very quiet with air that was warm and slightly damp.

Editing

This was a 5 sequence HDR image done thru Nix Effex Pro and Lightroom. This is pretty much as shot with a slight boost in contrast and virtually no adjustments to the color. The flat lighting created by the fog turned the surrounding landscape and water into a dull grey mystic environment.

In my camera bag

I had only one other lens - a kit lens - Sony DT18-70 3.5/5.6. with lens cleaning brush, cloth and a circular polarizing filter.

Feedback

Technical Elements: 5 sequence HDR image with exposures ranges of 2/3 stop difference, aperature priority setting, manual focus, ISO200, F11, focal length 200mm. Deciding to shoot in HDR allowed for the dynamic range of the scene to be captured more easily. The subtle grey tones held detail that I wanted to see in the finished photograph.
