Behind The Lens

Location

I took the shot at Upper Antelope Canyon in Page, Arizona on June 11th, 2014.

Time

It was just before mid day, best time of day for the light shafts.

Lighting

Lighting is at a minimum in these slot caves so you have to be able to either crank your ISO up to high levels or shoot using a tripod. If it is the light shafts you are wanting you need to shoot in the canyons between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D3x and a 14-24 f2.8 Nikkor lens. I shot it on a Vanguard Alta Pro 284CT carbon fiber tripod and a Vanngaurd SBH-250 ball head. I also used a Nikon MC-36A remote camera release to trigger my shots due to setting up in sand and not wanting to move the camera. Using the widest angle lens you have is highly recommended.

Inspiration

Years and years of build up of seeing other photographers work come out of this part of the world inspired me to seriously put it on my list of destinations and I am so very glad I did. You always hope the final product will live up to the hype and in this case I feel the shots from this trip came out great.

Editing

I shot this image bracketed so that I could really convey the multiple levels of light that I saw with my actual eyes. Due to it being so dark I only shot 5 brackets and I used a program called Photomatix to merge them using their Exposure Fusion system. I then finished the photo using Photoshop CC just to do clean up work and a levels adjustment.

In my camera bag

I normally carry two bodies, a Nikon D3x and a Nikon D810. I carry six lenses with me, the 14-24, the 24-70 and the 70-200 f2.8 Nikkor lenses. I also carry an 85mm f1.4 Nikkor lens to shoot portraits with and a Sigma 180mm f2.8 macro lens to shoot my up close work. I do very rarely use my Nikon 16mm f2.8 fish eye, but I carry it because you never know when you will need it. I also carry with me two flashes, a Nikon SB910 and a SB700. A Tiffen 10 stop variable neutral density filter, a Nikon MC-36A remote shutter release and I normally carry my Cam Ranger wireless remote shutter system that I can use with my phone to trigger from a distance. My last things I carry are tripods, my main one being a Gitzo carbon fiber GT5542LS tripod and I pair it with a Really Right Stuff BH-55LR ball head.

Feedback

The trick here is to make sure to sign up for the photography specific tours through one of the companies in Page. I used Overland Canyon Tours and they were great. You simply can't just go take photos on your own and if you take a normal tour you can't take a tripod. The other thing is to think fast and know your gear, they push you along at a pretty fast rate and knowing how to set up your gear in changing conditions quickly makes a huge difference. Shoot wide angle and try and shoot above f8 or higher to get the walls in focus. Try and be creative with what you are given because the canyon is small and most of these photos have been taken before. Make sure to scout as you are setting up maybe a different composition that you think may not have been done before. Be confident and make sure to check your focus in between set ups. Also NEVER change lenses while down there. Way too much dust and sand in the air it will swamp your camera sensor.
