Behind The Lens

Location

I was visiting Lincolnshire for only a few days and i went to the Butterfly museum, though, ironically this one wasn't in it (an escapee?!). I rarely photograph butterflies and outside 'life' so this is one of my faves with the intricate patterns on the wings and fragments of pollen.

Time

It was just before midday. Shot away from the sun, with a large aperture to single out the butterfly and add to the depth of field.

Lighting

As with singular, very obvious subjects of any photo, i wanted a large aperture to put more focus on the butterfly wing and blur the background - it was shot away from the near midday sun so as to not 'wash out' the colours and avoid all types of 'flare' or 'fringing' that might occur.

Equipment

This was using my macro lens i believe 35mm f2.8 with the Pentax K10D.

Inspiration

I'd not seen a butterfly like this before and had to capture it. When anything like this stays still long enough, capture it if you can!

Editing

No i did a raw conversion but not much else needed.

In my camera bag

Primarily being studio and Landscape, my Pentax camera - variety of lenses (ultra wide angle Sigma, Pentax 17 - 70, sigma 70-300 Limited Pentax 35mm), various filters (ND1000, ND grad and foggy filter), always have a battery grip for backup and i'm 'one of those' that likes the extra weight and shape of it. Compass, flashlight (wind up power) and overtrousers and lots of memory cards - essential to have, tripod and remote shutter release too!

Feedback

This was a 'spur of the moment' shot. Shoot open as you can to isolate the subject and blur the background. There's not a huge amount of time to think to compose with this shot so the best two things are shoot open and compose the shot.
