Behind The Lens

Location

I was taking a photography class through Community Education. Our instructor took us to the Beal Botanical Gardens on the campus of Michigan State University in Lansing. It is a great place to take nature shots. I have also used it for engagement, senior and family pictures.

Time

Springtime in Michigan can have a range of temperatures and Mother Nature is always unpredictable. This shot took place in the early evening hours on a beautiful spring weekday. We had comfortable temperatures but needed a light jacket as the sun was setting.

Lighting

It was a very sunny evening and the pond where I was taking pictures had a mixture of sun and shade which made it more challenging to get a creative picture. The sun was reflecting off the water which was giving the pictures a harsh color. I really had to play with the different settings and lighting options on my camera.

Equipment

I took this picture on my Nikon D90 with a AF-S Nikkor 18-105 lens. Even though the flash was on, it did not fire because it wasn't needed.

Inspiration

One of my assignments was to take a creative frog and pond picture. While there were a few frogs sunning themselves on a lily pad, I wanted something different. After slowing walking around the pond, I noticed this little guy peeking out of his hiding place as if he were watching me. I slowly lowered myself to the ground, got as close as he would allow and started clicking away.

Editing

With this picture, I used minimal processing but I did use Photoshop to improve the color of the frog. Because Kermit (although unoriginal, it is what I named him) was the focal point, I made the rest of the picture black and white and enhanced the color of the frog.

In my camera bag

I would rather have a piece of camera equipment and not need it then to need it and not have it. I carry my 3 lenses with me. AF-S Nikkor 70-300 mm, AF Micro Nikkor 105 mm and AF-S Nikkor 18-105. I also carry 2 tripods. I have a small tripod that can sit on a ledge or rock and the standard full size tripod.

Feedback

Be patient and think outside the box. Look for something out of the ordinary. Be willing to lay on your stomach in the dirt to get the shot.
