Behind The Lens

Location

I was driving on the highway - not to far from home - in an early June day, when I saw a field of poppies. The challenge was to find the road that gets me close to the field and to find a parking.

Time

It was just before noon, when I managed to park, get my CANON (with a 100-300mm lens on it) and my tripod out of the car. It was clear and sunny, however a bit of wind made me think that I will need a real fast shutter speed.

Lighting

Now, I had to set up....so, I looked for the direction of light and started focusing on well lit individual flowers.I wanted to have the field to be a blurred red background, where one can still see the general shape of poppies. "f/8 and be there" I reminded myself. ;)

Equipment

My equipment was a CANON 60D, with the CANON 100-300 mm DO zoom lens, mounted on a carbon fiber Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

I like poppies and this field in full bloom allowed for a lot of fun and lovely shots! Some made it into my Calendar: a perfect image for May of June.

Editing

At home, on the PC, very little post processing was needed for this image.

In my camera bag

I also carry a close-up CANON 100mm lens and a "general purpose" CANON 28-135mm lens.

Feedback

My advice is simple: look and experiment! Look means: learn to see what the subject is, what is the direction of light, what is the interaction between foreground and background. Experiment means: use your equipment and your imagination and take lots of pictures, with no inhibitions. Some will show up just as you want and it is easy to erase the rest! ;)
