Location
This photo was taken at Oxbow Bend in Grand Teton National Park. It is one of the most photographed locations in the world and you can see why!Time
I am not a morning person… waking up early to take this photo was a challenge for me. The scenery in this area of the United States is well worth any lost sleep! I woke up around 6 am to scout for locations and this one was on my bucket list. I arrived after 7 am and there were dozens of photographers already set up waiting for the sun to come over the horizon. This photo was taken on July 14, 2011 at 7:27 am.Lighting
Natural light was used in this photograph, magic hour…Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D3000 entry-level camera, 55-200mm/f 4.0-5.6. Remember I told you I was just starting out! I was a bit intimidated to set up my rinky-dink tripod next to some of the best equipment money could buy. I used the cheapest, aluminum tri-pod around. It’s so funny now thinking about it and how far I’ve come since then. Obviously, I am thrilled that this photo has become one of the most liked photos I’ve ever taken.Inspiration
Just look at it! I am a self-taught photographer and I took this photo in the early stages of my study. I was very lucky to spend a couple of weeks in this area and the inspiration that I gained from being here led me to my love of landscape and nature photography. This is a must shoot on any landscape photographers bucket list!Editing
The post-processing that I did was fairly minimal. At the time, I had no other post-processing software other than iPhoto. Really! I played with the highlights, mid-tones, and saturation. That is what was used for the initial edit. After a year or so, I purchased Photoshop Elements 10. In this edit, I added a levels layer, that’s it.In my camera bag
Currently, I shoot with a Nikon D7000. My favorite lens is the AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR. I always have the kit lens of AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR and the AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D prime with me as well. I try to pack as minimalist as possible because I dislike carrying around a suitcase!Feedback
I cannot say enough about the magical time before dawn and dusk. The lighting at this time of day is absolutely amazing. Every time I am outside during these hours (whether I’m photographing or not), I stop and look around at the change of color on my skin, the foliage, the sky, everything. It is beautiful! I am always observing our amazing world and taking the time to stop and look. There are many angles that the natural light can reflect and it is important to observe this at different times of day and use this to create a photograph that inspires you!
