Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at a dock in my neighborhood, so I didn't even need a car.

Time

I was watching the lake for a couple of evenings and the lighting was getting great around sunset. I decided to set up a tripod on the dock to try and get the fabulous colors that we get at dusk particularly in November in Florida.

Lighting

The small window of time when the sun goes down past the horizon and the sky is starting to get dark is a great time to be near bodies of water.

Equipment

I shot this with my trusty Canon T2i and a kit lens. I used a no name tripod and a shutter release to minimize camera shake.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture what was left of the light of day with the coming darkness of the night. I wanted to include the moon at the top as part of the whole picture. I love the reflections on still water but as I was shooting a boat went zooming by and messed up my initial shot. I patiently waited for the water to calm then I noticed how the slight waves were catching the light or creating shadows. I was then grateful for the boat and feel the motion gave a little more interest to the image.

Editing

I did very little post processing on this image as the colors were vibrant on their own. I did straighten the horizon a little.

In my camera bag

I usually have an extra camera body, an old fixed lens, a long zoom (Tamron's new 150-600 - woo-hoo - love it!) for my bird images and a standard zoom. I will rent lenses on occasion for special projects or vacations. I also carry an extender, wipes, tissues, extra batteries, and multiple CF/ SD cards in my bag. I also go nowhere without my Samsung Note 3 which also takes amazing photos.

Feedback

Pick out a spot on a lake near you and watch it every few days and see how the light is reflecting at different times of the evening. Make a plan and have your gear ready to go and get there early to set up you may encounter issues that might delay you. Most of all try to capture something that you love and connect with and others will feel it when looking at your image.
