Friends of mine called me the other day to encourage me to come witness the gorgeous TULIP TREE that was in bloom down the block from their home. Though I have grown up and spent most of my life in the Midwest and specifically Illinois, I was excited to have discovered a tree that is a SURPRISE, if you will! (and I must now locate one and get one planted in my yard just as soon as possible) Tulip tree has very unique leaves that resemble a tulip shape. They are bright green and measure 4-8" long and wide. They turn golden yellow in the fall.

The flowers are 2-3" long and also shaped like a tulip. The petals are yellow-green, with the center being an orange color. Blooming time is May-June. The tree may take 15 years or more before flowers appear. Tulip trees, which is also commonly called yellow or white poplar, is not a poplar at all. It is part of the Magnolia family. Larry was able to pull down one of the lower branches so that I could delight in the full beauty within the flower. Truth be told you might now experience the glorious color if you were just wandering by. Their beauty is sort of hidden within the flower petals. The Tulip tree is the state tree of Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee.

I "thought"--when they invited me to come over that the Magnolia is WHAT I was coming to see. That was the image in my head--WHO KNEW that such a beauty existed right here in the state of IL! LOL! So, now I MUST have one in my yard. Next spring we will be planting one, I can hardly wait. Thanks for your kind, supportive words. I am grateful

(GIGGLE) I called our local nursery and I will be planting one of these beauties in the spring, we are having a well put in soon (next few weeks) and then I have to remove 1 tree that I planted 3 years ago--this Tulip Tree will go perfectly in "its" position. Then I will be able to enjoy its beauty from my kitchen window for all the days of my life that are left!
