Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a small Nebraska town called Tilden. My husband and I were visiting his family for the holidays. The building you see is actually a garage in the neighbor's back yard.

Time

I got up early to take the dog for his morning walk. There was a light snow that fell during the night and the sun was coming up and casting shadows across the sparkling whiteness.

Lighting

The shot was taken using the natural light from the morning sunrise.

Equipment

The photo was taken using my Nikon D90 DX 18-55mm lens, no flash, just natural light and handheld.

Inspiration

The scene made me feel calm and peaceful, yet haunting at the same time. The shadows cast by the branches of the tree were like fingers reaching out to me.

Editing

The picture was cropped, color was edited to black and white, and a very slight vignette was used.

In my camera bag

My Pelican usually has my 3 Nikons: D90, D5300 and D7000. Nikkor 18-55mm, Nikkor 70-300mm, and a Tamron 200-600mm lenses, and my tripod. Most of my shots are taken using natural light or camera flash.

Feedback

I am still learning the technical aspects of photography myself. My skills have been by trial and error. My advice to others is to keep at it and don't limit yourself to one specific type of photography. Shoot everything until you find what you are really good at. With me, I love taking nature photos, landscapes and animals. But I also love portraiture and have done my children's photos and their children as well. I did my daughters baby announcements, baby bump photos, family portraits, and granddaughters senior and graduation photos. If I can see it, I'll shoot it! I always have a camera with me no matter where I go. I am very passionate about my hobby.
