Behind The Lens

Location

This was a going away party for a friend, and I was trying to take the kid's photos but as kids often do, they weren't cooperating. I decided to give them time to relax and at that moment I looked up and saw how amazing the clouds and shadows were behind this building. It was taken on the rooftop terrace of a Midtown Manhattan building.

Time

As the party progressed, I decided to take photos of the kids, before they became restless, and I remember it was around 3pm when I stopped to look at the clouds.

Lighting

The day was partly cloudy and the sun would sneak in from time to time, when I took the picture the sun was hidden, and the light was just right to reveal enough details in the shadows, to make it dramatic. The clouds helped cast a diffused light onto the building and at the same time helped with the dramatic factor.

Equipment

This was shot on a NIKON D90 using an aperture of f/10.0 with an ISO setting of 200, and an exposure of 1/400.

Inspiration

This is one of those photos that you take, because its right time and the right image, I was lucky to be there just as the clouds were there.

Editing

I use Adobe Lightroom on most of my photos, and this photo was no exception. I worked on the highlights and converted the image to black and white.

In my camera bag

With my Nikon, I carry a bag that holds my 50mm, a fish eye lens and a 300mm lens. I also carry various filters such as UV, Polarizer and other color correcting filters. I also keep a Nikon speed-light sb-600 flash and a collapsible reflector.

Feedback

I think it's always important to be patient when capturing any image, take your time look at the image through the viewfinder and through your own eyes. Wait and edit the photo in your mind, ask yourself, will be black and white? how will I crop it? Finally composition is the defining factor, through which the story is told.
