Location
This photo was taken in the upstairs master bedroom of my house. I turned the bed 90º to have a blank wall so as to not have any distractions to compete with the model "Cassie" and the balloons.Time
The photo shoot started about 7:30pm and lasted about an hour.Lighting
I only used 2 lights. One at her head and one at her feet. It was total side lighting. No light at all coming from the front. On the right is a wireless strobe in a softbox with a grid to keep the light focused. I wanted it to seem like maybe she fell asleep with a light left on so we could see her face clearly. At her feet was another wireless strobe in a snoot, again to really contain the spill light. I added a blue gel to this one to simulate an open window with blue moonlight streaming in.Equipment
Canon 7D 18-55mm kit lens. 2 LumoPro light stands. Photoflex SilverDome NXT, Small Softbox with grid. 1 Canon 580EXII Flash and 1 LumoPro LP180 Flash with Pocket Wizard TT5 Tranceivers. Manfrotto MT190CXPRO3 Carbon Fiber tripod with Giottos MH1301 Ball Head. Camera & Lens Settings: Manual exposure f/8 @18mm 1/60 ISO 320Inspiration
It was taken for a photo challenge assignment in a photography class I was taking. Each week we had a different theme word for the assignment. That week the word for the challenge was "Light". I knew many people would be taking photos having to do with brightness, but I wanted to have my photo deal with the weight aspect of the word "Light". I thought it was a fun play on words to use "Light Sleeper" as the title for the image.Editing
No. I just had to find a girl that didn't weigh a lot so she could float in the air with just 4 balloons. Ok, actually I shot 2 main images and combined them in Photoshop. The first one was with the model. She is on the bed 1-2 feet above the sheets supported by a very short stool under her hips and a rectangular box under her shoulders. She really does have 4 helium balloons tied to her. Then without moving the locked down camera on tripod, I shot other images of the bed without the model. The pillow and teddy bear were in different positions on the bed so I could choose later which one I liked best. With the 2 images in Photoshop, I removed the supports under the girl and raised her up another foot or so. The hardest part was removing the supports and fixing her nightgown so it looked like it was falling from her hips naturally. I also made the image much darker than originally shot and removed some specular highlights from the balloons. Lastly I created her shadow on the bed.In my camera bag
My bare minimum 3 lenses would be my Canon 18-55mm, Canon 55-250mm and my Canon 50mm 1.4. I like to shoot either super wide, or super telephoto. The 250mm is approx. 400mm on a full frame camera and I probably shoot with that the most. I also like to take portraits and love a very shallow depth of field. I usually shoot my 50mm at f/1.8 or f/2. A circular polarizing filter is a must for outdoor and landscape photography.Feedback
I like to test an idea if I try and shoot something new or difficult or outside my wheelhouse. In this case I did a test shoot the night before with me as the subject. I could spend time moving the lights, adjusting the power of the strobes and fine tuning the manual camera settings. A remote shutter trigger came in handy. This way I knew the technical aspect of the shot was going to be what I wanted. When it came time for the actual shoot, I could work completely with the model on the creative aspect.
