Location
The shot was taken at a small water hole at Londolozi Private Reserve, Sabi Sands, South AfricaTime
This was taken late afternoon as the sun was about to set.Lighting
The lighting was difficult. I shot this at ISO 1600, f/9, 1/125 sec which is pretty slow for wildlife photography.Equipment
The camera I used was a Canon 7D with a Canon 400 DO with a 1.4x. I did not use a flash or tripod, but I was resting my arms on the side of the vehicle for stability.Inspiration
There were two lionesses and 3 cubs plays at the water hole. This provided for lots of photo opportunities however the lighting was poor. This was one of many shots that gave me a unique perspective on their life.Editing
There was very little cropping, however I had to work hard to build up the contrast, sharpness and levels because this was shot in raw.In my camera bag
Currently I carry a Canon 7D II, Canon 1Dx, Canon R5 with Canon 70-200 2.8L III, 100-400L II and 400 DO with 1.4x with other supportive lenses.Feedback
With wildlife photography expect the unexpected and be prepared for it, even with difficult lighting. Now with the R5 I would have no issues bumping the ISO to 3200 or 6400 or even higher to make sure my shutter speed was faster. I lost some great shots because of motion blur.
