Behind The Lens

Location

At Queens Wharf Newcastle, NSW Australia. It is a observation tower that makes a lot of people smile with it's unique look.

Time

My photos a predominately storm photos. I have been taking them for 25 years. The hardest thing about taking storm photos is they are unpredictable. Most of my favourite storms happen between 10pm and 3am. My wife just loves when a storm comes at 2am and I jump out of bed get my gear ready and drive around Newcastle all morning looking for the perfect spot (not). This shot I took a long time ago I am pretty sure it was around 11pm.

Lighting

Another tricky thing with storm photos is lighting. Its about getting a balance with the intensity of the lightning and the light or exposure of the subject just right. with this shot the lightning was super close the next bolt I got out of there pretty quick. If the lightning is too intense it can blow the shot out and if you compensate too much for that you won't capture the lightning.

Equipment

As I mentioned before this was an oldie it was taken with a Canon 400d with the kit lens. On a Manfrotto tripod and a manual canon trigger.

Inspiration

I love taking storm photos and have done for 25years. This tower shot I was after for a while and this was the right storm. Some photos that I took this year I have been trying to capture for 25 years. My whole angle is that I wanted to get storm photos of local landmarks or places that I chose and the storm dictates which one I take on what day. This shot I was hoping to get it hitting the tower but I think this was more interesting.

Editing

Not alot. This shot had a water drop on it that I removed. I do a little noise reduction and brightness and contrast adjustments in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

When I do my storm photos I now have a canon 5dmiii and a 6d 24-105 l series kit lens, 17-40 l series. I also take a intervalometer and I just purchased a MIOPS trigger, a Gopro 4 silver. I have the biggest heaviest Manfrotto studio tripod with spring loaded legs this is my favourite thing. I use both cameras if I have time to set them up. One of them I use to take a TL the other I can change lens and location when I want.

Feedback

Most of all safety (this shot was not but it was a while ago) The best storm pics are as the storm approaches the other when it is leaving. Rain and wind are the enemy. Planning prior to the storm what you want to take a shot of. Always have gear ready when you know one is coming. Watch the radar. Most important Patience, Patience and Patience are essential to get the best shot.
