Location
It was a strange day when the clouds seemed to descend on the loch where I lived and this picture was taken from a bridge over the Crinan Canal as the clouds/mist started to lift. I later worked on this canal for British Waterways in West Argyll, Scotland. The picture was originally taken on my Olympus film camera and later switched to a digital image. I have sold a couple of copies, and one day hope to recreate the image in oil paint.Time
I suppose it was mid morning by the time I had travelled to this spot, so about 1030am and the cloud was still drifting over the nearby loch.Lighting
A totally natural effect from the cloud and I took several shots before being satisfied that this was the 'one'. Of course I could not check the image as I was using a film camera.Equipment
My Olympus OM3 rested on the bridge, with just a daylight filter on the lens.Inspiration
The mystery of the cloud that descended on the loch was my inspiration, as I knew that once the cloud started to lift, there would be some great images. When I arrived at the canal bridge the mist/cloud hid the boat completely and I just sat and waited as the sun started to melt away the cloud.Editing
Once the film was developed I chose the image for enlarging but no other processing was required, and it is now one of several images hanging in a local hotel. In my camera bag
Nowadays I have two digital cameras; my trustee bridge camera a Fuji Finepix HS20 EXR which has a brilliant lens range, and a small Nikon with a fixed lens. On a deliberate shoot I take a pro tripod and a selection of filters.Feedback
Anticipate the weather and try to be where a likely shot is going to occur. It may not happen, but you have to be in the right place to start with, or the shot is missed. I have often had regrets about not being somewhere when I can see the weather would produce good pictures.
