Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken on an obviously, frosty morning in late October in Cleveland, Ohio. I took my dog for a walk in the park near my home. Hoping to find something interesting to take photos of, I took my camera as well.

Time

Because I like to take my dog for a walk in the early mornings, this is when the photo was taken, while the sun was rising in the sky, and the frost was beginning to melt.

Lighting

The lighting pretty much speaks for itself. I don't particularly care for artificial lighting, so the sun was absolutely perfect! I saw how the sunlight was illuminating the frost on the grass, and this fallen leaf was standing straight up. I knew being backlight would give the frost a glowing effect, but the little surprise I liked was the translucency that came from the sunlight behind it, showing the veins within the leaf.

Equipment

Again, this was taken with my trusty backup Canon 20D. I had a standard 18-55mm lens attached, and I did not use a tripod. In fact, I wasn't even looking through the camera. I trusted my instincts, placed the camera directly in the grass, aimed toward the leaf, held my breath and snapped. Unbelievably, this was the first shot I took! Just for safe measures, I took one more, but the camera didn't focus on the leaf that time.

Inspiration

I'm always looking to shoot an object from a different angle, as most inquisitive photographers do. With either small objects, or ones that are low to the ground, I want to get on that level. And the sunlight was so beautiful, I couldn't pass up this opportunity.

Editing

The frost made for a beautiful photo, but I wanted to accentuate it more. I played with the levels to bring that out and in the process, the veins in the leaf showed even more. I lost some color in the leaf, so I brought it back in.

In my camera bag

I carry a couple of Canons. My 20D and a 50D. I either keep on a standard 18-55mm or a 50mm f1.4 lens. I have a couple of zoom lenses, a flash that works well in many situations, and a simple tripod. Of course, I have several filters to pop on in certain settings.

Feedback

My advise is to observe. Look for things out of the ordinary, or better still, ordinary things and see if you can photograph it in a different way. I feel these everyday things that are shot in an extraordinary way makes for a striking photo.
