Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured on the shore of Lake Willoughby in Westmore, Vermont. This area is one of my favourite 'hunting grounds' for my photography, as my family and I vacation there every summer.

Time

If I remember correctly, this image, and several others, was created when I took my morning stroll down to the beach in the summer of 2014. It is a portion of a weathered tree, the roots of which have been exposed by years of erosion from water, wind, and harsh winters. I took several shots of this tree from various angles, as it offered multiple fascinating shapes and shadows in the early morning light.

Lighting

Nothing was done to influence the lighting -- it is all natural.

Equipment

This was shot with an Olympus C-5000Z, using only the built-in lens.

Inspiration

My favourite subjects have always been those found in natural settings, particularly trees and water. For me, old or dying trees make for the best images of texture and shapes--the beauty is in the details, so that is what I tend to focus on. Early morning walks are the perfect time, for me, to look for such subjects since I am usually the most awake and aware then. The shape and positioning of this part of the tree stood out as evoking the passage of time that affects the natural world.

Editing

Very little post-processing was done other than tweaking the contrast and some highlights, and a little cropping, using GIMP software.

In my camera bag

My equipment is very simple, since my cameras (at this point) are those I have acquired with no financial outlay: Olympus C-5000Z, Lumix DMC-FZ18; bluetooth selfie-stick for use with my Pixel 4; tripod.

Feedback

My only advice is applicable to capturing any image: be open to shooting whatever catches your eye, but first train your eyes to truly see the world around you, in connection with your heart, and don't be afraid to get in close.
