Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in our side yard in rural southwestern Ontario. We have a bush in our backyard and, as such, have lots of wildlife around.

Time

This photo was taken in the middle of June in the early evening.

Lighting

There was beautiful natural evening light, no extra lighting was needed.

Equipment

I took this photo with my Pentax K-7 and a 50-200 mm lens, handheld no tripod.

Inspiration

These cedar waxwings were helping themselves to the abundant strawberries in our patch despite my attempts at dissuasion. One evening a flock of the birds congregated on our young maple tree. I was amazed at how close I was able to get to take this photo before they flew off.

Editing

I did a little post-processing of the raw photo in lightroom - clarity, vibrance, and saturation, as well as a slight vignette to draw attention to the birds and away from the background.

In my camera bag

I keep a few lenses in my bag to cover any chance opportunity - 55 mm prime, 16- 50 mm and a 16 -250 mm zoom as well as my external flash. The tripod usually gets left at home.

Feedback

This photo was taken at the spur of the moment, my advice would be to be ready for anything!
