Location
This photo was taken in my back garden. I often go into the garden to photograph insects, so that's how I found this little guy.Time
If I remember rightly, I ventured out just before 12 in the afternoon, so the natural lighting was perfect for macro photography.Lighting
I wanted to capture the light on the web, so I made use of the natural lighting whilst the sun was out. I always find natural lighting to be the best for macro photography, as it gives the subject a natural look.Equipment
This was taken on a Canon EOS 400D with a Tamron macro lens on manual focus. I find it much easier to use manual focus when taking macro photos, as the subjects tend to be so small that it is hard to find the right focal length.Inspiration
I saw the orb spider sat directy in the middle of his web, and thought it would look perfect as a photo. I never tend to centre a subject, but instead rely on the rule of thirds, so I photographed the spider more to the left. The focus is on the front part of the spider, as his face is the most interesting part to see.Editing
I only had to adjust the contrast slightly to brighten the photo. In my camera bag
I always use my Canon EOS 400D, as she is my first proper camera and has always been my trusted partner for photography. I even gave her the name Florence, after the band 'Florence and the Machine'. I also take with me my 75-300mm zoom lens and my Tamron macro lens, as well as my remote control incase I need to prop the camera up and take a shot with longer exposure.Feedback
Natural lighting is the best source of lighting to use, and try to avoid using the flash if you can, as it takes away the natural look of the photos. Also, auto focus does not always capture the focal length that you want in your photo, so experiment with manual focus to get exactly the right depth of focus that you want.
