Location
This image was captured on the North Shore of Oahu at a famous surf break called Bonsai PipelineTime
It was about 6am in the morning in the winter time and the light was just amazing. Beautiful glow shining through the waves every time they crashed onto shore.Lighting
When you want to get a backlit wave you need to shoot it either early in the morning or during sunset time right before the sun melts into the ocean as the angle of the sun is going through the wave then instead of down onto the wave.Equipment
Canon 6d, Sigma 200-500 lens Manfrotto Tripod.Inspiration
The lighting and the shape of the wave caught my eye. It was beautiful out. It's Hawaii it is like this a lot.Editing
I try not to do too much in the way of changing the photo as far as color. I try to make the photo look the way I saw it with my own eyes. I shoot in RAW so I have to add a little saturation and contrast to the image with Adobe Camera raw.In my camera bag
I usually have a Canon 24-105 L series, A Canon 70-200 F2.8 L series, My Video Slider for stock footage and sometimes I bring a Canon 580EX II flash with me if I am shooting portraits.Feedback
If you want to capture great photos of waves you need to learn how waves work. How they break, where the peak of the waves are. Each wave is different. You also want to know when the best light will come for each location. Be observant. You can also create some awesome effects with waves by slowing down the shutter speed and show the movement of the wave. Not shown in this photo but just play around and have fun with your photography and you will eventually come out with some amazing photos.
