Behind The Lens

Location

I was out for a walk along a Whitewater river near my home in Wisconsin and looking for something unusual to shoot. The sky was very bright and the trees bare since it was early spring.

Time

I usually go out walking early in the morning before the sun gets too high in the sky. This day, I was a little later, around 10:00 before the sun was overhead. The position of the sun gave off beautiful shadows in the water

Lighting

My main objective was to capture the sun orb in the water and make it look like the tree branches were reaching out to capture it. So, while I moved around on the shore, I kept my eye on the sun until it reached the right tree. From there, I did a little bit of twisting and turning so that the tree seems to reach out from the right side of the frame toward the orb.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 6D, a Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 lens.

Inspiration

The reflection in the water with the sun just so made what would have been an "average" image into something interesting to look at.

Editing

Very little post processing was done on this image. I darkened the shadows a bit and changed my setting to black and white.

In my camera bag

When I am out walking, I always take my Canon 6D, the Tamron 24-70 mm f/2.8 lens, Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 lens, a Manfrotto retractable stick tripod with feet on the bottom, lens cleaner, an extra battery and extra memory cards. Sounds like a lot for a walk but I am used to carrying it all and I am prepared for that unexpected picture when it comes into view!

Feedback

The only thing I can say to those who wish to capture a similar image is to keep your mind and eyes open. You never know what will pop up in front of you. Don't look for the every day image. Look within that image and find the unique.
