Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Tampa Zoo after one of their Birds of Prey Show.

Time

I'm very happy with the way this photo turned out considering it was shot on a very sunny day at 1 pm. This was shot at the end of the Birds of Prey Show when one of the birds is brought out in order for the audience to meet and see the birds up close.

Lighting

This photo was shot in natural mid day lighting with no additional lighting equipment. I got lucky in that the person holding this owl after the show for the meet and greet stood in open shade. This allowed me to get nice lighting in an otherwise very unflattering natural lighting situation in mid day sun.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D90 with a Nikon AF-S VR 70-300mm F/4.5-5.6G IF-ED lens set at 122mm, f/4.8, ISO 400 and 1/60 of a second. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I love to photograph all kinds of animals. I find them fascinating and will use every opportunity I can to photograph them and to watch their behaviour. This owl looked like it was posing for me and I just had to take it's photo.

Editing

I did very limited post-processing in Photoshop Elements.

In my camera bag

Depending on what I'm intending to go out to photograph will depend on the equipment that I carry with me. Generally, I always carry my Nikon 10-24mm, Sigma 17-50mm and Nikon 70-300mm. If I'm going to do some macro work, I will take my Nikon 85mm macro and if I am going to photograph birds or wildlife I like to use my Sigma 150-500mm. For low light situations, I will also use my Nikon 24mm and 50mm lenses. I also have the Nikon sb-700 flash unit. As for camera bodies, I have a Nikon D90 and D7000.

Feedback

One piece of advice I can give others is when photographing any type of animal is to have lots of patience. Also, learning the behaviour of your subject is extremely important. When photographing animals, there is a lot of waiting and watching for the right time to capture that perfect moment.
