Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Wilderness State Park in Kent, Washington

Time

This image was taken at about 2pm on March 6th 2008

Lighting

The lighting was our normal simi-overcast Washington State day.

Equipment

The equipment used was my Nikon D40 body, Nikkor 18-200 lens, no flash, no tripod.

Inspiration

There was a male and female mallard swimming around the dock and I decided the best way to shoot them was to lay down on the dock to get a unique angle, and this little gal decided to swim toward me, probably hoping I had something to feed her.

Editing

I always do a little post-processing. I shoot all my images in RAW, so I run them through lightroom. I save the original and place it in file by date, then I do small adjusting in lightroom, things like leveling the image, a small bump in clarity, maybe a little exposure adjustment and then switch it over to JPEG as I transfer the images from lightroom to a new file that I make for that days images.

In my camera bag

My Lowepro SlingShot 302 AW Camera Bag has a Nikon D300 body(I have upgraded since this image), Nikkor 18-200mm lens, Sigma 10-20mm lens, Sigma 105mm lens, Nikkor 50mm lens, many different filters, extra battery, extra memory cards, cleaning brush and clothes, glove with index finger missing, hair ties, note pad, pens, aspirin, sinus medication, handi-wipes, emergency thermal blanket to use on the ground to keep out of the mud when on knees, stomach or behind.

Feedback

Get down to the animals level, place your focus on their eyes, try for a shallow Depth of Field, never put your subject in the center of the frame and try to give them freedom within the image. No matter what get out there and take images play, learn, try new things, get comfortable with your camera. Practice, practice, practice.
