Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken outside the Blu Restaurant and Bar on Folley Beach in Charleston, South Carolina

Time

This was taken in june, 2011 around 11am. A beautiful morning!

Lighting

Not really, lighting was all natural

Equipment

I shot this with my Canon 5D and the 24-105 L lens

Inspiration

I was sitting at a table waiting getting ready for an early lunch. The clouds weren't doing much at first but when I looked again a few minutes later they were streaking across the sky. I love clouds and was working on a cloud project, so I snapped a few images.

Editing

The original image was nice, but it just didn't blow me away. I'm a big fan of Nik Software's Silver EFX Pro, so I converted it to black and white. Then I painted the blue back into the umbrellas and there it was! It has become one of my most popular images.

In my camera bag

My Canon 5D of course, and a number of lenses. The 50mm 1.8, 100mm 2.8 Macro, 17-40 f4 L, 24-105 f4 L, and the 70-200 f4 L. Also a couple of B+W polarizers, cable release, memory cards, etc.

Feedback

Well, I'm always looking for compositions that include great cloud formations. Clouds can really enhance a typical landscape photo, and tilting the camera up to capture more sky than land is the key. There's always a happy medium though, so try a few different angles. Keep your foreground sharp! This was shot at f4 and everything looks nice and crisp. I focused on the closest umbrellas, but everything was far enough away that the entire image was sharp.
