Behind The Lens

Location

Planet Exotica Royan, France

Time

11.00h am

Lighting

The light in the terrarium is always very difficult. Firstly, it is artificial sunlight secondly the light comes only from above. Both is very bad for photography. I use no flash light for animals.

Equipment

Nikon D4, Nikkor 24-70mm, small LED light

Inspiration

My son is a big lover of reptiles and we have often visited the reptiles exhibition. I made some photos through the glass panes and it offered very nice motifs but usually, the snakes have not moved. Those who know my photos I love the movement. So I asked the owner if I can get to shoot during the feeding. That was the beginning of a great collaboration and many beautiful photos.

Editing

All my photos are made in a RAW files. In lightroom the yellow spot from the artifical light can be well corrected with temperature and tint. I use Photoshop to enhance the texture details for example the eyes, fur and bring out their natural beauty. Finally a vignetting it lifts the motive even more apparent.

In my camera bag

Nikon D4, Nikon D4s, Nikkor 80-400mm, Nikkor 24-70mm, Sigma 150mm macro, SB-900

Feedback

It takes a lot of patience to work with wild animals you can't force it. Worthwhile to observe the animals first. The better you knows the behavior the better you can estimate what they will do next. Then it is called patience, watch and wait for the right moment usually there is only one. You have to stay calm even if it does not work the first time. Animals are very sensitive they notice when you get nervous, then it will not fold. In this case it will be better to stop and to try it another day.
