I had not a lot of time to shoot because the sun disappeared very quickly behind the mountains.Equipment
Nikon D4s, Nikkor AF-S 80-400mm F/4.5-5.6 G ED VR, freehand.Inspiration
To photograph a free running horse was a desire since I have my DSLR. The power and beauty is very fascinating for me. The problem; there are no wild horses living in my region and the place where horses can run free very limited. So I had to wait two years until the opportunity offered to be able to fulfill my desire. Many thanks to Cornelia and her beautiful American Paint Horse Chelsy who made this possible!Editing
I shoot everything in RAW. First I develop the pictures in Lightroom, lens correction, contrast, depth, noise reduction, temperature, dynamic.... Then I take the photo to Photoshop there I'll get out more details, more clarity just in the main object, highlight some light and shadow with dodge and burn, clone stamp disturbing things away and vignetting around the object to highlight it even more.In my camera bag
Nikon D4s, Nikon D4, Nikkor 24-70mm my allround lens, Nikkor 80-400mm my favorite lens for all kind of action shots (dogs, horses, birds, sports...), Sigma 150mm macro, Speedlight SB-900 and a reserve battery.Feedback
To photograph horses is more difficult than dogs. They are very difficult to control if they are free. If they don't want then they don't want. In no case they should be forced to do something. The risk of injury is to high and it's inappropriate for the species. I have found an owner with a super relationship of trust between her and her horse which makes it easier. The light in the morning at sunrise and in the evening at sunset is at its best. Select the location and where you placed you previously. It remains only a short time with the perfect light. Choose the AF on continues and the continuous-advance mode, exposure 1/1250 or shorter if the light allows. Place yourself so that the horse will running up to the light. Sit on the floor to get a good perspective. I shoot free hand to be as flexible as possible if you should meet any problems with this, use a monopod. Good luck !
