Location
I took this photo within the boundaries of Canyonlands National Park (S.E. Utah) at an Archaeological site known as "False Kiva". It's about a mile and half hike from the nearest road and besides a buddy of mine who is also a photographer, we had this view and an incredible sunset to ourselves.Time
Just before sunset around 6pm. A pair of Ravens were gliding around above the alcove we were set up in, watching with curiosity. Light end of day breezes from the west, quiet and peaceful.Lighting
The lighting from the setting sun was bouncing of the high diffused clouds and reflecting off the west facing cliffs. The pattern of shadows and patches of light were constantly changing as the clouds moved above.Equipment
Cannon Rebel T3i, Tripod,Inspiration
False Kiva is a very spiritual place because of the generations of humans who have used it over the centuries. The pueblo people of a 1000 years ago must have enjoyed this same view and the many sunsets that happened in front of them. The alcove of False Kiva creates a huge window looking toward the SW and gives you the feeling of shooting from inside an amphitheater. As darkness continues to deepen, the bats start to emerge and the first stars start to brighten. One of the best reasons to take photos here is that every time I've made the hike in, besides the people who have come with me, we have had it to ourselves!Editing
Very basic color correction and shadow adjustments, with a bit of sharpening in lightroom. This a single imageIn my camera bag
Because of the hike into False Kiva being a bit steep and requiring a hike out in the dark, I limit the usual stuff I carry in mu bag. It's very basic with a portable tripod, standard lenses and also a good pair of binocs for spotting wildlife. A good headlamp for negotiating the steep trail back out along with some extra warm (elevation) clothing depending on the time of year.Feedback
Because there is no marked or maintained trail into this particular spot within Canyonlands National Park, do some research before heading in for the hike. The park does allow access to this area but no over night camping. Get in early as you will want sometime to capture the actual Archaeological features before the lighting disappears latter in the day. It's a no brainer, but watch the weather and time of year as these can increase your chances of getting a shot like this.
