Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured in the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado approximately 50 miles from the town of Durango, Colorado and near Silverton, CO. The rive the train is crossing is called the "Animas". The elevation is around 9300 feet

Time

The Durango Silverton train was heading back down the mountain to Durango in the late afternoon on a crystal clear "Blue Bird" Colorado day

Lighting

Even though late in the day, the lighting was still a bit sever as it was late August. I had the sun at my back which helped.

Equipment

I was using a Canon D80 with an 10-18mm lens and had it mounted on a tripod.

Inspiration

The Durango Silverton Railroad is one of the few places in the world where historic narrow gauge steam engines are still in use. They used to bring miners and ore to and from both Durango and Silverton. The river and old wooden bridge allowed for a natural frame with the puff of smoke from the stack adding some drama.

Editing

Not much post processing was required, a bit of sharpening and clarification along with luminosity.

In my camera bag

Typical equipment including three lenses, external lighting, an extra battery and lens covers and a small portable tripod.

Feedback

Scout your location at different times and plan to be there as long as needed including planning for inclement weather. Patience really is the key as if you believe the image is worth capturing then take the time to get it right.
