Location
I took this during a trip in the northern North Sea during winter.Time
It was around 1500 hrsLighting
Most of the day was dull and flat due to the storm. Just as the sun started to set the sky broke for a short time and changed the whole scene.Equipment
I used a Nikon d90 with the 70 - 300 mm vr lens. Shot was taken hand held in order to get the shot as the ship I was on was rising and falling about 20 to 30 feet on the sea swells which made tracking the subject a challenge as he was rising and falling about the same.Inspiration
I wanted to show the daily struggle men go through and the dangers they face while working the North sea.Editing
Only cropped and straightened the horizon a bit.In my camera bag
Nikon d610, nikon d90, nikon 70-200 f2.8 vr, nikon 70 - 300 vr, sigma 24 - 70 mm f2.8 and tamaron 10 - 24 mmFeedback
Timing is a must, too early and the boat is behind the swell, too late and you miss the breaking bow wave. I found vr to be a god send for this but it still needs good balance. I normally shoot off about a burst of 3 or 4 to ensure one good hit. Aperture of around f8 at least but if you don't have sun then you might need lower apertures or higher ISO as this type of photo is normally taken in dull lighting due to the stormy conditions. I normally try to keep a low ISO as the sea spray can make the picture look grainy without any help from higher ISO settings.
