Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my home town of Peterhead in North East Scotland, just a short walk from my house.

Time

It was around midnight that I took the photo after sitting for around an hour until I could see the northern lights with the naked eye over the town lights.

Lighting

Nothing special about the lighting. The town lights spoiled the northern lights slightly but they were quite strong that night so still worth the shot to get a well known local landmark in the photo.

Equipment

The Nikon d90 with the tamaron 10 - 24mm lens. A little bit of light painting with a torch to show the sides of the tower in shadow.

Inspiration

Getting the northern lights in my home town with a well known landmark. We are lucky enough to get quite a few opertunities to take the northern lights in this are of the UK but not often strong enough to work against street lights.

Editing

Just a bit of cropping and lightning of the shadows

In my camera bag

My bag normal has the recently bought Nikon d610 full frame body and my d90, my lenses are the Nikon 70 - 200mm f2.8 VR, Sigma 24 - 70mm f2.8, sigma 50mm f2.8 macro and my tamaron 10 -24mm.

Feedback

Use the app called aurora alert UK for the northern lights, a good tripod, clear sky and patience. The northern lights have a habit of growing brighter just when you think they are done. Shutter release cable is essential. I usually try to use a low ISO for quality and around f8 if they are bright enough, but if you want sharp stars with no trailing then up the ISO and use your lowest appetite.
