Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken while camping at Coopers Creek, Victoria. A great reason to get up early is capturing the beautiful sunrise.

Time

This image was taken in the early hours of the morning, it was cold and misty and waiting for that sunrise to appear was just magical, so peaceful and calming.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the sunrays through the trees and the mist and also get some reflection on the water. Capturing this at the right time was a must, as you know once the sun is above the horizon it becomes very bright and you loose the rays.

Equipment

The equipment I use is my vanguard tripod, canon 5D Mark II, wide angle L series 17-40 lense and a must is a remote shutter release.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture a peaceful, mystical shot as it was that sort of place. Somewhere where you could just sit back relax and enjoy the beautiful sunrise over the water.

Editing

Yes landscape photos usually always need a little post processing, here I have merged 3 raw photos together to create HDR image. Which makes the shot look a lot more real.

In my camera bag

Wow, I usually carry a lot in my bag, maybe a little too much, but I know if I don't I will usually miss that item. I carry my Canon 5D Mark II and also my 40D for backup. I have my 17-40 L series lense, 24-70mm L series, 85mm L series, 50mm, and also my 70-200mm L series zoom, my ND lenses, remote shutter release, Canon speedlite 580EXII, tripod and lots of SD cards and spare batteries.

Feedback

Get up bright and early, when no one is around, find the best location for your shot, set your camera on a tripod and a shutter release is a must, work out what you want to capture and set your camera accordingly, with my shot I wanted to create a HDR image, therefore I had to set my camera to 3 different exposures and I set my f stop to f22 so I could capture the star effect of the sun. Make sure you have something warm on and sit patiently for that beautiful sunrise to appear and enjoy the moment.
