This photo was taken at Marine Park in Bellingham, WA on the first snow of the season.Time
When we got the snow fall that afternoon, I knew that getting to places would be a bit easier with my Ford Explorer. After driving all over town, I had made up mind to go to Marine Park.Lighting
To me the lighting was about challenging. I had to wait until it had stopped snowing and the sky was a bit brighter. But as the time went by, it started to snow a bit harder and I knew that it would be doing so for a while. So I just adjusted the white balance as best I could to avoid such overexposure.Equipment
My equipment consisted of Canon T3i, generic tripod (when starting out, just make the best of what you can get away with) with my camera bag hanging from it to keep it more stable. The lens that I used was a Canon EF-s 55-250mm telephoto lens at 65mm. I used a cable shutter release and no flash was used.Inspiration
I wanted to go this place after I have seen this picture in many ads, postcards, , newspapers and such. But I never seen one done in the snow. This was my main inspiration. I noticed that park wasn't closed and so I headed there and found a good spot.Editing
For this picture, I actually did have to do some post-processing using Adobe Photoshop. As a matter a fact, this picture was 6 pictures stitched together with about half of each picture overlapping. I tried to get as much of each picture aligned as best as possible. Mind you, I am just starting out and have only been this for about 6 months to a year.In my camera bag
My camera has just about everything I need to get the shots I want or think of what to shoot when I'm driving. I never know what I may see at any given time. My bag usually has 2 Canon battery packs since the cold weather can be a bit harsh and drain them pretty fast. I have my Canon shutter release, Canon 85mm f/1.8, Canon EF-s 55-250mm, Canon EF 50mm 1.8 II, and my little stock kit Canon 18-55mm lens. Along with these items I carry my Macro tubes and telescope camera adaptor (I started out doing some astrophotography).Feedback
First bundle up as best as you can. When the weather turns, you want to be prepared and warm as best as you can. Plan out your shot. Look at what is there and see what can be removed with Photoshop. For example, on the left side there was a huge garbage dumpster that just had to go. Get that feel of what moves you about the place (fear/scary, nostalgia, a postcard image, etc.). For me was a classic 50's-60's classic black and white feel to it.
