Ready for ritual. I have great respect with this people. In the era of modernization they still preserve their culture.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Cass Lake, Minnesota, USA. during the Ojibwe and Chippewa Indian Americans POW WOW.

Time

It was one bright sunny evening when the sun was about to rest after look day of shining. The time was 7:24:27 PM to be exact.

Lighting

Before the final ritual dancing started the Indian Americans were positioned where the lighting was front lighting so I saw it was so harsh. While observing them, there was one guy passed near my side so I ask him if i could photograph him. He agreed and I directed him to position himself 90 degrees angling to the sun. So I can have shadow. We took the photo and I noticed by directing him where to position made the photo looks dramatic.

Equipment

Canon EOS 7D, canon EF85mm f/2.8 USM

Inspiration

I love the customs and traditions, I love their meaningful and symbolical dances, I love their colorful outfits which represent their personal reflections and traditions meaning connected with the earth. I love how they use the symbol of birds, flowering grass. I love how they honor animal beings and most especially nature. Those are the reason why I took photos of them.I want to document their religious rituals and show them to the world so that others will respect and love them as human.

Editing

I just cropped it.

In my camera bag

Canon Cameras, Canon lens (depending on what subject I am planning to take photos of) If it is for macro then I need to have macro lens, if it is landscape then I have wide angle in my bag. Tripod, Cable release.

Feedback

By merely directing your subject where to position himself/herself you can get good lighting. Remember always that you are photographing people and the psychology is people really love to be photographed. Respect them by merely asking them if you could take photo of them, then direct them if you think your light is not really good. There are certain rules you need to follow especially when you take photos of people, you need to consider their beliefs. I remember one of the Native Americans asked me not to photograph his headdress so I did not photograph his headdress. Always show respect and they will cooperate for you to take good photos. Do not forget if you are photographing in an even like this then you won't have to ask a release from the one you take photo of because this is a public event.
